The recent NHS trusts' own surveys have found that one in three hospitals is dirty, yet high cost PFI contracts cover the cleaning of hospitals. This situation is giving rise to hospital patients contracting MRSA and other related diseases whilst in hospital and unnecessarily exposes hospital staff to infection too. This state of affairs is unacceptable and must be ended.
Keeping hospitals safe also depends on the public ensuring that all medical staff are treated in a fair and reasonable manner to maintain morale and guarantee sufficient numbers of people wish to enter the medical profession in the future. Unfortunately this is not the case with regard to doctors' jobs or the nurses' pay claim which is being paid in two stages, the second stage in October.
We say....
- Cancel the cleaning part of PFI contracts where there are dirty hospitals as the contractors have not carried out their part of the contract, and bring back it back 'in house'
- END NHS PRIVATISATION
- Ensure jobs and career prospects for doctors
- Pay the second stage of the nurses' pay claim now.

Solidarity rally - Northern General Hospital, Sheffield
Monday 20 August 2007, 12.30pm – 1.30pm. Herries Rd entrance, Northern General Hospital, Sheffield.
Solidarity rally on the first day of a strike by Bulk Stores workers at Northern General Hospital, against local Trust decision to axe thousands of pounds worth of allowances from their pay packets.
UNISON members want equal treatment for all and their message is:No cuts in the wages of the lowest paid
Stop demanding that some of those affected by the recent floods repay time they were forced to take off.
UNISON warns that these issues may not affect some staff but if the Trust is able to win it will then come back for more and it could be any one group of staff next.
Rally supported by Sheffield Trades Union Council, UNISON and other trade unions

Valentine's Day protest - national blood service centres
14 February, 12pm-2pm.Staff at National Blood Service centres around the country will be protesting at reckless new reconfiguration strategies which plan to condense 11 local processing and testing sites into just three 'supercentres'.
Your freely donated blood will have to be driven up to 200 miles and back after it leaves your arm. It puts more reliance on an already overloaded and frequently conjested up motorway network. In case of major incident - how would you feel about only one centre (in Manchester for example) handling the blood needs of the whole of northern England's hospitals? These plans WILL affect the patient in the bed.
And on top of this around 600 skilled staff are being thrown onto the scrapheap...
If you're free to get down to your city's local blood processing/testing centre around lunch time, any show of support however small will be gratefully received!
